New data centre under construction in Western Sydney

The site outlined in red

A new data centre is under construction, to be located in Western Sydney.

The new data centre will provide essential services for business and community through storage of cloud and electronic data - and contribute to the growth of knowledge and professional service jobs.

The data centre will be used for the storage of data and related information technology hardware with an anticipated total power consumption of approximately 400 megawatts.

The site for the data centre is at 51 Huntingwood Drive, Huntingwood, and is within the Huntingwood Industrial Area in the Blacktown local government area - see map below. The site is well-connected to the wider regional road network via the Great Western Highway and the M4 and M7 Motorway.

A State Significant Development Application was submitted to the Department of Planning and Environment in 2022 and approved by the Minister for Planning and Environment in 2023.

About the data centre

The building will be approximately 50 metres high or about seven storeys and will house 2,592 lithium-ion battery cabinets. It will be built in stages and include two electricity substations, fuel storage and emergency back-up generators, below-ground water tanks and hybrid dry-coolers and water-cooled chillers.

The site where the data centre will be built is approximately 90,172 square metres. It is zoned IN2 Light Industrial, under the Blacktown Local Environmental Plan 2015 (BLEP2015), and there is an existing light industrial building on the site, previously occupied by Endeavour Energy for its administration and operations. Similar light industrial developments surround the site.

The data centre will create 1,333 jobs during construction, and another 276 full-time jobs when it is operational. Once complete, the data centre will be staffed 24 hours each day.

About construction

Construction of the new data centre at 51 Huntingwood Drive, Huntingwood involves the following:

  • Demolition of existing industrial building

  • Bulk earthworks to prepare the site

  • Installation of supporting infrastructure and services, including a new electricity substation on the site

  • Construction of a seven storey, nine-metre-high architect-designed building

  • Associated landscaping of approximately 12 square metres

  • 137 car parking spaces (including three accessible spaces and ten bicycle spaces)

The work will generate some noise and there will be increased traffic movements, on Huntingwood Drive and Brabham Avenue. You may also see work vehicles parked on Huntingwood Drive during working hours.

Construction will take place between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. No work will take place on Sundays, public holidays or after hours unless required under NSW Government requirements or in an emergency.
